Matthew James Buss

Matthew passed away quietly in the early morning of Monday, 21 April 2014, following a year-long battle with head and neck cancer.

Aged 41 years, Matthew was born 11 November 1972, in Riverside, CA. He married Jennifer Dykes in Houston 19 April 2008.

Matthew graduated from General H.H. Arnold High School in Wiesbaden, Germany, where he first met his wife Jennifer, and attended Trinity University in San Antonio.

Throughout his over-fifteen-year career with the Houston Chronicle, Matthew held several positions, including Digital Imaging Technician, Ad Services Manager, and most recently Pre-Media Manager. He was a loyal employee and a devoted manager, extremely fond of his co-workers and team.

Matthew was a champion billiards, poker, and table tennis player who enjoyed spectator sports of all kinds, especially hockey, and was an avid fantasy baseball participant and roulette enthusiast.

Matthew was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Alice Buss of Odessa. He is survived by his beloved wife Jennifer Buss and his faithful dog, Henry, of Houston; maternal grandparents Joe and Marilyn Van Hoff of Midland; his mother Karen Zavatson and Jim Zavatson of San Antonio; his father John Buss of Omaha, NE; his brother Will Buss of Silver Spring, MD; his brother Greg Buss, Katy Buss, and niece Presley Buss of San Antonio; as well as a large and loving extended family, all deeply saddened by his loss.

Matthew's family is grateful to the Houston Chronicle and Maersk Drilling USA, Inc., for their touching support during this difficult time.

The family will celebrate Matthew's life in a memorial service on 03 May 2014, at 11:00 AM, at the Live Oak Friends Meeting Skyspace, 1318 West 26th Street, Houston, Texas, 77008.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to MD Anderson to sponsor cancer research, or to the American Red Cross, whose good work Matthew himself supported:

Matt, I still can't believe you're gone, buddy. We weren't best of friends, but what I knew of you I loved. Always upbeat, always smiling, and I can't think of anyone at the Chron or anywhere else who didn't like you. I guess that's one goal I would love to attain before I go, though I don't know that I will be able to the same way you did. Rest in peace, my friend. I know your wife and family will never get over losing you at such a young age. I can speak for all your friends in saying that we won't.

I am so truly sorry for the loss of Matts warmth and kindness. It has been years since high school, but I vividly remember our parish youth retreat, and his sharing so much of his smile, enthusiasm and sheer and perpetual kindness throughout all of the bus rides back and forth from school, I am touched to have known him, sad to have lost touch over the years but grateful for the chance to have experienced his joy in life. I will keep Matt forever in my prayers and memories, and try to keep the smiles as kind.

We met through a friend of mine over twenty years ago in Frankfurt/Germany and we celebrated New Year 1991/1992 at the "Wunderbar" together. I still think of you everytime I am listening to Garth Brooks even though we had lost track of each other. You will never be forgotten.

Karen, Jennifer, friends and family,
I never got to meet Matt, but kept up with him through Karen, my daughter Lexi's tutor. One time Lexi drew Matt a picture when he was in the hospital. He sent Lexi the sweetest thank you note – I thought Matt must be someone really special. Words cannot express the sorrow and unfairness his loss brings. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of you who were touched by Matt, we hope you find peace, laughter and comfort in the many memories which you no doubt have. Blessings, The Medingers

Matt was in Model UN with me. I remember him always as smiling, and that he was smart and funny and kind. I am glad he had a life with love and family, and sad that it ended so prematurely. I am sure that he is again smiling and knows how many lives he touched while he was with us. I hope his family feels the comfort, support, and love of his Warrior family in this heartbreakingly difficult time. You are in my prayers.

Matt was a really gifted table tennis player back in his time in Germany. He was anything but stylish as far as I remember yet he had all the coolness that I thought was typically American. That was reflected in his play: easy and self-confident. He really did not like losing but whenever he lost (which did not happen too often) he lost in style. That was also true for his last defeat.

I have known Matt from a very young age, and grew up and graduated with him in Wiesbaden. He was a good friend -- super smart, always smiling, always funny, and always kind. I regret that we lost touch once we both moved back to the U.S. My heart goes out to his entire family -- you are in my prayers. He will be deeply missed.

I went to school with Matt in Germany. He was a great guy and an even better friend. He always had a way of making me smile and seeing the best in people. My heart goes out to his family. Matt has joined the ranks of many fighters who have lost their battle to cancer, to include my mother who I lost in Sep. I am dedicating a luminaria in Matt's name for our Relat for Life in June. Fight on Matt...fight on!

Dear Jen, dear Karen & Jim, dear Greg & Will
with tears in either eye which I am not ashamed of... words cannot begin to describe the loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time and I wish you all the strength to carry on what Matt would have wanted you and all of us to do.

With Matt I have lost one of my dearest friends and someone who has touched my life in so many more ways than I can even begin to say... not least the fact that the U.S. became our second home and our son Jason is now a little American... In loving memory of someone I truly call a friend and who will not only be sadly missed but certainly also never forgotten for he deeply enriched our lives.

We went to school with Matt and Jennifer in Wiesbaden and were thrilled to hear of their marriage. Cancer has taken yet another young soul far too early and it simply does not seem fair. Jennifer, may time heal your heart while memories of Matt comfort you. Our deepest condolences are with you.

I will never forget how welcoming Matt & Jenn were when I first moved to the US with my wife. I will miss his punctual jokes, and the funny insistence that I was obliged to know about soccer being Brazilian - when I really didn't care much. A fun and loving man, may God bless your soul Matt and watch for you family, specially the lovely Jenn and Henry. Vidal

We will miss Matt dearly. We will miss seeing Jen's face light up every time he walked into a room. Matt was a good friend, 'uncle' to Erin & Darcy, talented BBQ-er, ace bowler and Jen's soul mate. The world lost a good man.

Matt's precious family,
I am not sure of the right words…I was so very sad to hear this news. I did not even know that he was suffering. I left the Chronicle in 2007. Matt was a fantastic person. Always smiling and very helpful! We had great conversations, just seeing his photo here makes me smile. I will pray for all of you during this difficult time and hope that you find the comfort and peace that Matt has now. You all have a new angel...

To Jennifer, Matt's family and friends:
For the last year, Matt's friends at the Chronicle have been waiting for the day of his return. He was ever the good guy, the good friend, the kind and gentle spirit who persevered through discouraging times of various sort with an optimistic disposition. I talked baseball, pool, soccer, poker and a hundred other things with him over the years. Now we know he will not be walking through the door again. It is hard to accept, of course, yet he remains with us. He will be missed. He will not be forgotten. I'm glad I knew him. And it should go without saying that our thoughts and prayers are with you. We share your pain, and the hope that in some way we may yet see him again, smiling as ever.
Until that day ....
